Email builder background images

Permission required to use this feature: create campaigns

When you create an email builder template or build an email, background images can be added to individual sections.

To do so:

  1. Click to the side of an email section to activate it.
  2. In the left sidebar, in the "Background and border" section, click Choose file.

Background images can only be set for individual sections, not the entire email. They are limited to a maximum width of 3,200 pixels, and a maximum height of 16,260 pixels.

Not all email clients support background images. Read more about background image compatibility.

Additional background image settings

Here's how you can control how the background image displays on different screen sizes.

Size

  • Original — Display the background image at the dimensions of the image file.

When the image is wider or taller than the section, the background will be cropped by the section's width or height, or both.
  • Cover (NEW) " Shrink or stretch the background image size so it"s just large enough to cover the section's width and height. The setting does not affect the dimensions or file size of the image file itself.

When the image has a taller or wider aspect ratio than the section, the background will be cropped by the section's width or height.

Repeat

  • Don't repeat — Typically used for larger images which should cover the entire section. The background's position is set by the focal point setting.
  • Tiled pattern — Particularly useful for seamless textures or patterns. Repeats the background image width-wise and height-wise, starting from the top-left corner.

Focal point (NEW)

To make sure the most important part of background image doesn't get cropped out at any screen size, you can specify a focal point which will always remain in view.

The focal point position is relative to both the image and the section. For example, if you place the focal point selector 10% from the left and 70% from the top, that point of the image will always be positioned 10% from the left and 70% of the section.

To help you centre the background image, vertical and horizontal guides will appear when you drag the focal point to the centre point.

Focal points can only be set for non-repeating background images. Tiled patterns will be aligned to the top-left corner of the section.

Full width background images

To make a background image full width:

  1. Click to the side of the email section with the background image.
  2. In the left sidebar, in the Layout and spacing section, click the Full width layout button on the left.

Background image compatibility

While background images are supported in a number of email clients, they currently will not display in:

  • Outlook 2007?2019 on Windows
  • Windows 10 Mail
  • Android 5?6's native email app (not Gmail)

Background images can also be affected by image blocking.

To support these clients, we recommend picking a background colour similar to your image as a fallback.
